Reusable drink bottles are an everyday essential, but many people don’t realise the hygiene risks hiding inside them. Studies have shown that poorly cleaned bottles can harbour millions of bacteria, sometimes up to 40,000 times more than a toilet seat, largely due to moisture, mouth contact and hard-to-reach crevices.
For New Zealand entrepreneur Tessa Burger, the issue was something she experienced firsthand.
“As a mum, a professional and someone who enjoys being active, my drink bottle was constantly leaking, growing mould in the straw and becoming one more thing I had to manage,” she says. “I realised the issue wasn’t people being lazy. It was bad design.”
That frustration led to the creation of Mode & Opal, a New Zealand brand focused on designing drink bottles that make hygiene simple. The stainless steel bottle features a wide opening, minimal components and fewer hidden spaces where bacteria can build up, making it significantly easier to clean properly.
Designed to move easily between school bags, gym sessions and office desks, Mode & Opal combines practicality with a premium aesthetic.
“If a bottle is quick and simple to clean, you’re far more likely to do it regularly,” Burger says. “That’s where good design quietly improves everyday health.”
The brilliant bottle is available online at modeandopal.co.nz and through select retailers across New Zealand.

For many people struggling with exhaustion, the advice is familiar: improve your bedtime routine, limit screens, take supplements, try another sleep aid. Yet despite doing everything “right”, countless New Zealanders still wake up tired.
According to leading sleep health clinic Auckland Sleep, the problem may not be sleep itself, but everything happening during the day.
Their newly launched Sleep Strong programme takes a different approach. The 16-week holistic wellbeing programme is designed to address the deeper lifestyle factors that influence sleep quality, energy levels and long-term health.
“Sleep is not an isolated event that happens at night – it’s the outcome of how we live our entire day,” says Dr Sumit Samant, ENT and Sleep Surgeon and founder of Auckland Sleep.
Many patients arrive at the clinic having already tried supplements, strict routines and even sleep studies. But without addressing the broader picture, nutrition, physical activity and stress, lasting improvements can remain out of reach.
Sleep Strong was developed in partnership with Strong Foundations to bridge that gap, combining sleep medicine with practical lifestyle support. The programme integrates clinical nutrition, personalised movement and stress management alongside sleep guidance to help participants rebuild energy and resilience.
Rather than chasing quick fixes, the goal is long-term change.
“Nutrition, physical activity and stress management have a profound impact on sleep depth and recovery,” says Dr Samant. “Sleep Strong gives people practical, expert-led tools they can sustain.”
A tiered approach to better sleep
The programme runs over 16 weeks and is offered in three tiers, allowing participants to choose the level of guidance that suits their lifestyle and goals.
Bronze – Sleep Strong Foundations
An accessible starting point including a nutrition eBook bundle, beginner online exercise programme, monthly in-person accountability check-ins and access to a private community, with optional one-to-one support available.
Silver – Sleep Strong Lifestyle Reset
Includes a 60-minute consultation with a clinical nutritionist, three follow-up sessions, intermediate exercise programming, fortnightly one-to-one check-ins, a sleep journal, recipe library and additional lifestyle tools.
Gold – Sleep Strong Total Reset
The most comprehensive option, offering weekly one-to-one support, personalised exercise programming across all levels, a premium wellness workbook and priority support via text, email or app.
A whole-of-life approach to sleep
Auckland Sleep has built a reputation as one of New Zealand’s leading sleep authorities, combining medical expertise with a patient-centred approach.
For Dr Samant, Sleep Strong represents an evolution in how sleep health is supported.
“At Auckland Sleep, we pride ourselves on ensuring people feel heard, supported and empowered,” he says. “With Sleep Strong, the goal isn’t just to improve sleep scores – it’s to help people build a sustainable lifestyle that supports their wellbeing long term.”
Designed to meet people where they are, the programme provides expert guidance, practical tools and flexible pathways for people who want to break the cycle of poor sleep and low energy.
Because better sleep, ultimately, starts long before bedtime.

We’re past the January rush and well into the part of the year where intentions are tested, where fitness becomes less about declarations and more about discipline. Quiet, consistent, and considered. It’s no surprise then that Pilates, yoga and mindful movement continue to rise, not as trends, but as foundations for modern wellbeing.
Globally, Pilates has become one of the most sought-after forms of exercise, celebrated for its ability to build deep core strength, improve posture, support injury prevention and enhance mental focus, all without the impact or burnout associated with high-intensity training. Paired with yoga and barre, it represents a shift toward longevity: movement that supports the body now, and well into the future.
This global movement is mirrored locally, particularly in Christchurch’s north. Northwood and Belfast, once defined by orchards and open land, have evolved into some of the city’s most desirable and fast-growing residential communities. With that growth comes a new kind of lifestyle demand and that's one that values quality over quantity, privacy over performance, and spaces that feel intentional rather than crowded.
It’s within this context that Core Pilates and Mind quietly stands out.
This is not a studio chasing trends or volume. Instead, it offers a refined approach to wellness — reformer Pilates, yoga and barre delivered in a calm, light-filled environment designed to support focus and progression. Open windows, natural light, greenery and thoughtful design choices set the tone from the moment you arrive. The space feels restorative, not performative and it's somewhere you can arrive as you are and do the work properly.
Privacy is a defining feature here. Small classes, professional instruction and world-class equipment create an atmosphere where attention stays on form, breath and control. This is stealth fitness: no loud branding, no pressure, no spectacle. Just consistent, intelligent movement and results that speak quietly for themselves.
Under new ownership, the studio feels both grounded and refreshed. The offering is inclusive without being generic, welcoming both newcomers and experienced practitioners. Flexible memberships and concession options acknowledge that modern wellness needs to fit real lives and not the other way around.
What makes spaces like Core Pilates and Mind particularly relevant now is the broader cultural shift happening around fitness. People are stepping away from extremes and returning to practices that respect the body, support mental clarity, and reward consistency over intensity. Pilates and yoga aren’t about doing more. They’re about doing things well.
In a growing part of Christchurch where lifestyle is increasingly shaped by intention, Core Pilates and Mind reflects exactly where wellness is heading: quieter, smarter, and deeply effective.
This is strength built from the inside out.
And for those who know, you know where to go.
