IN DEPTH WITH THE BEAUTY EXCHANGE

CM caught up with the founder of this beautiful circular economy

1. Tell us a little about yourself. What inspired you to create The Beauty Exchange? I’m Courtney, the founder of The Beauty Exchange. I’m a mum of two and work in the medical device industry. The idea came from my own experience during pregnancy, when my skin changed dramatically and many of the premium beauty products I’d invested in no longer suited me. I found myself with products that were still in excellent condition, but there wasn’t a dedicated marketplace where I could easily sell them myself. That experience made me realise I probably wasn’t the only one. Whether it’s a skin change, buying the wrong shade or an unwanted gift, so many premium beauty products go to waste.

2. Was there a defining moment that made you realise the beauty industry needed a more sustainable solution? It wasn’t one single moment, it was the validation that followed. After experiencing the problem myself, I started researching whether others felt the same. I sent out a survey and spoke with people across the beauty industry, including makeup artists, and the response was overwhelmingly consistent. Everyone had premium products sitting unused, and there was no dedicated marketplace to give them a second life. That’s when I realised this wasn’t just my problem and it was a much bigger opportunity to create a more sustainable solution

3. The Beauty Exchange champions circular beauty. What does that concept mean to you, and why is it so important? To me, circular beauty means extending the life of quality beauty products instead of letting them go to waste (which we are all guilty of!) Its about keeping beauty in use, not in landfill.

4. How do you believe sustainability enhances the luxury beauty experience rather than taking away from it? A premium brand doesn’t lose its quality because it changes hands. Sustainability allows us to extend the life of great products, which makes luxury feel even more meaningful.

5. What has been the biggest challenge—and your proudest achievement—since launching the business? The biggest challenge by far has been building The Beauty Exchange from the ground up while on maternity leave without an IT or web development background. I’ve had to learn every aspect of creating a functional marketplace as I went, which has been incredibly challenging but also hugely rewarding. Looking back, I’m proud of how far I’ve come on my own, and I’m excited to now be working with a local development company to create an even more seamless, user-friendly seller experience that’s truly aligned with the brand. Watch this space!

6. Trust is everything in beauty. How have you built confidence around authenticity and product quality? Like any new product or offering, building trust takes time. From the beginning, creating a safe and trusted marketplace has been one of my top priorities. Every listing is manually reviewed and approved, and I’ve invested significant time in developing clear product guidelines and comprehensive terms and conditions to protect both buyers and sellers. As more people use The Beauty Exchange, repeat buyers, returning sellers, and word-of-mouth recommendations continue to build trust and strengthen our community of beauty lovers.

7. What changes are you seeing in the way New Zealanders shop for beauty products today? We live in a world of overconsumption, and I think most of us have been guilty of buying more beauty products than we need. What I’m seeing now is a real shift, with people across all demographics becoming more conscious of waste and more intentional about how they shop. Whether it’s selling products they no longer use or finding premium beauty at a better price, people are realising they can make smarter purchasing decisions while also having a positive impact on the environment

8. What does "eco-luxe" mean to you? At The Beauty Exchange, eco-luxe means buying better, wasting less and making premium beauty accessible through a circular marketplace

9. Looking ahead, what is your vision for The Beauty Exchange over the next five years? Over the next five years, my vision is for The Beauty Exchange to become New Zealand’s go-to destination for buying and selling beauty products. I’d love to see a thriving community where giving beauty products a second life becomes the norm rather than the exception.

A big goal of mine is to partner with local and premium beauty brands to help give quality products a second life. Whether it’s end-of-line, short-dated, or excess stock, I’d love to create a solution that makes premium beauty more accessible while helping brands reduce waste.

Ultimately, I want The Beauty Exchange to change the way New Zealanders think about beauty showing that sustainability and luxury don’t compete; they complement each other.

10. Finally, what does beauty mean to you personally? To me, beauty is about the small things that help you feel your best, whether that’s a great skincare routine, a favorite product or simply taking time for yourself.

CM Quick Fire

- Skincare or makeup? Skincare (its the base to great makeup!)

- Your can't-live-without beauty product? My Cloud Nine hair straightener

- Favourite place in Canterbury to unwind? I love good food and wine and am most relaxed at any of the amazing wine bars and restaurants we have in Christchurch

- Your definition of luxury? It’s a feeling, not a price tag

- Finish this sentence: "Beautiful living begins with…" choosing better, not more.

THE BEAUTY FILES

Freeze. Fracture. Flawless.

Winter skin treatments have entered a new era, and CM is officially intrigued.

Nestled in the heart of Merivale, Blush Skin Clinic has launched the new DMK Cryo-Pro X Facial, an advanced skin revision treatment designed to harness the power of cryotherapy and targeted exfoliation for calmer, clearer and more radiant skin.

Dubbed the facial that encourages skin to "freeze, fracture and fall away", Cryo-Pro X works by exposing dead skin cells to an intensely cooling environment while polylactic and glycolic acids help encourage gentle exfoliation. The result is a controlled resurfacing process that removes redundant skin cells while protecting the healthy skin beneath.

The experience begins with a refreshing menthol chill before building into an icy cold sensation that feels worlds away from traditional peels. Think less aggressive resurfacing and more intelligent skin revision.

What makes Cryo-Pro X particularly appealing through the Canterbury winter is its suitability for inflamed and reactive skin concerns. The treatment is recommended for those experiencing dermatitis, acne, rosacea, congestion, hyperpigmentation and advanced sun damage, helping to calm irritation while supporting a brighter, more even complexion.

For CM, this is where science meets luxury.

There is something wonderfully indulgent about retreating from a Christchurch frost into a treatment room where cooling technology works in harmony with the skin's natural processes. No harshness. No drama. Just thoughtful skin health with visible results.

At approximately 45 minutes and with a usual RRP of $199, Cryo-Pro X offers an accessible entry into the world of advanced DMK skin revision. It can also be incorporated into a range of customised treatments at Blush, allowing therapists to tailor the experience to individual skin goals.

For those seeking a winter reset, this may be one of the season's most exciting beauty launches.

CM Loves: The combination of cryotherapy, gentle exfoliation and inflammation-calming benefits. Quiet luxury skincare isn't always about adding more. Sometimes it's about helping the skin let go of what it no longer needs.
