The Routine He Didn’t Know He Needed

One teenage tester. Zero skincare routine. A little persuasion from Mum. Then Sahlo happened.

There are certain conversations between a mother and a teenage son that are destined to receive an eye roll.

“Have you washed your face properly?” is apparently one of them.

Before testing Sahlo for Cantabrian Magazine, skincare simply was not on the agenda for our teenage reviewer. Shower, hair, teeth, out the door. Adding bottles, steps and another thing to remember morning and night did not sound remotely necessary.

Mum thought differently.

There was some convincing involved. Possibly more than some. Then something unexpected happened. He actually liked it.

“Should my face feel this good?”
That was one of the first comments to come out of the testing period and probably tells you more than any carefully constructed beauty review could.

Sahlo has been created in New Zealand specifically for young, changing skin. Founders Louise and Sarah developed the brand after watching tweens and teens navigate a skincare world increasingly filled with complicated routines, strong active ingredients and products that were not necessarily designed with younger skin in mind. Their own children were involved in testing and feedback as the range developed. That simplicity proved to be the winning formula in our house.

The routine begins with clean me up, Sahlo’s gel cleanser. It transforms into a soft foam and is designed to remove the everyday combination of oil, dirt and whatever else teenage life manages to deposit on a face without leaving skin feeling stripped. The formula includes New Zealand sourced Totarol, derived from the native tōtara tree, and has been formulated specifically with the young skin barrier in mind.

Then comes hydrate me so, a lightweight moisturiser designed to absorb quickly rather than leaving the heavy or greasy feeling that can immediately put a teenager off skincare. Its hero ingredient, Hybloom, is a zinc hyaluronate complex used to help attract and retain moisture in the skin.

Two straightforward steps. Teenagers do not necessarily need a bathroom cabinet overflowing with skincare. In fact, keeping things simple is one of the smartest places to begin. A gentle cleanser, hydration and daily sun protection can establish the foundations of looking after skin without turning it into another complicated job.

The biggest change during our Sahlo trial was not a sudden obsession with skincare. It was something far more useful: consistency.

“My skin needs a routine?”
Apparently, yes.

Once he could actually feel the difference, remembering to use the products became significantly easier. Skin felt softer. The steps were easy. There was no complicated sequence to memorise and no sense that skincare belonged exclusively to girls, beauty enthusiasts or adults trying to correct something.
It simply became part of getting ready.
“I can’t believe how soft my face is now.”
For parents, that may be Sahlo’s cleverest achievement.

Teaching teenagers to look after their skin does not need to begin with insecurity. It should not be about pointing out spots, pores or perceived imperfections. Starting a skincare routine can instead be framed exactly as we teach brushing teeth, washing hair, eating well or wearing sunscreen. It is basic self care.

Sahlo seems to understand the audience it is talking to. The packaging is bright, the product names are playful and the language is uncomplicated. Behind that personality, however, is a range formulated and filled in New Zealand with young skin specifically in mind. The brand says it works with New Zealand cosmetic chemistry expertise and focuses on gentle, barrier friendly formulas rather than harsh acids or unnecessarily complicated regimes.

There is an important parental footnote her, too. Skincare trends move quickly online, particularly among younger audiences, and more is not always better. Teen skin generally does not need an adult anti ageing routine or a collection of powerful active ingredients simply because they are trending. Keeping the basics gentle and age appropriate is a sensible starting point, with broad spectrum SPF added every morning and professional advice sought for persistent acne or other skin concerns.

Our tester did not emerge from the Sahlo trial speaking fluent skincare, thankfully. He did, however, emerge with a routine.

The boy who needed convincing now knows what cleanser does, understands that moisturising makes his skin feel better and, most importantly, is actually willing to keep doing it.

Sometimes the best products for teenagers are not the ones promising them more. They are the ones that make taking care of themselves feel easy enough to begin.

CM TESTED
Verdict: Mum was right.

We suspect that may be the only part of this skincare review our teenage tester would prefer we kept quiet.
