Christchurch Shows Up for the Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon

Christchurch delivered the perfect stage for one of the country’s most loved junior sporting events, as a blue-sky Sunday set the scene for a record-breaking turnout at the Sanitarium Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon.

Held for the first time at Halswell Domain and Pools, the sold-out event welcomed more than 2400 tamariki aged 6 to 15, who swam, cycled and ran their way through the course with determination and huge smiles. The energy across the domain was unmistakable, with whānau and friends lining the course to cheer on every participant.

The impressive turnout places the Christchurch event among the largest in the TRYathlon’s 33-year history, reinforcing the city’s reputation for showing up in force when it comes to supporting youth sport and community events.

Adding an extra dose of inspiration to the morning was Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon ambassador and New Zealand sporting star Tori Peeters, who spent time encouraging young athletes throughout the event before proudly presenting medals to participants as they crossed the finish line.

For many of the children taking part, the reward wasn’t just the medal waiting at the end, but the confidence gained from completing the challenge — a core part of what has made the TRYathlon a national favourite for more than three decades.

Sanitarium New Zealand General Manager and Cantabrian Michael Barton says the strong Christchurch turnout highlights the event’s special place in the community.

"We had an exceptional turnout in Christchurch, with a record number of children taking part and incredible support from friends and families.
"Now in its 33rd year, the TRYathlon has become a much-loved tradition, and we're proud to host an event that gives kids of all abilities the chance to try something new, build confidence and most importantly have fun."

With sunshine, cheering crowds and thousands of determined young competitors, Christchurch once again proved why events like this thrive here — a city that celebrates participation, community spirit and the next generation giving things a go.
