Come from Away is the story we didn't know we needed. At a time in the world's history when we are desperate for confirmation that humans are intrinsically good, this show proves it and left me with hope; an emotion that has been faltering in recent months.
It is the incredible true story of what happened following the aftermath of 9/11, when 38 full flights were diverted from US airspace to the small town of Gander in Newfoundland, Canada. The 10,000 residents of this simple, remote place with a big airport, found themselves receiving and taking care of 7000 displaced travellers who, at first, had no idea what was going on. As the locals navigate this unusual situation, they open their homes and their hearts to these strangers from all over the world. Bonds are formed, friendships are made and there are many moments of true joy as well as immense sadness.
It felt appropriate to me that the Premiere of Come From Away should be in Christchurch. We know about loss, displacement and resilience following the 2011 earthquakes but this show reminded me of all the goodness that can come during times of turmoil.
This is not a show of doom and gloom. It is warm, touching and at times hilarious and is expertly executed from start to finish. When you consider that Showbiz is largely made up of volunteers and amateurs - the quality of the performances are mind-blowing. Usually I would mention particular actors or roles for you to watch out for but that is impossible here. Each actor portrays multiple roles, storylines, varying accents and personalities with heart and humour, and their energy is mesmerising. There is no interval in Come from Away and the actors are on stage for the duration of the 100 minute show and yet, I didn't want it to end. It is beyond impressive.
The stage set is worthy of note, featuring a revolving stage and something called 'chairography' where the furniture and props on the stage are manipulated by the actors themselves to create various locations and scenes. As if they didn't have enough to think about! The cast have clearly committed huge amounts of time and energy into Come from Away and it shows. The music and songs, although new to my ears, were moving, rousing and incredibly 'foot-tappy'. I particularly loved that the musicians are on stage with the actors rather than hidden away in the pit. It gives the numbers a presence and resonance that is quite unique.
Come from Away got an emotional and energetic standing ovation that was well deserved and I am sure this will be a nightly occurrence.
Thank you Showbiz Christchurch for bringing us this incredibly relevant and important story - it gets full marks from me, a resounding 10 out of 10! If you see one show this year - make it Come from Away - your life will be richer for it.
